One of modern music's most prolific and creative artists, George Clinton was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina on July 22, 1941. His first group, PARLIAMENT was formed in the mid 50's and released a series of doo-wop singles for such labels as ABC and NEW, as well as several unreleased sides for Motown. In 1967, Parliament scored a Top 20 hit with "(I Wanna) Testify" followed by "All Your Goodies Are Gone," both on Revilot Records.
Two years later, Clinton and his extensive network of musicians formed FUNKADELIC, carrying his evolving funk philosophy into more progressive realms and recording (under Parliament, Funkadelic and Parliament/Funkadelic banner) a string of landmark albums over the course of the next several years, including such influential and innovative efforts as "Free You Mind an Your Ass Will Follow," "Maggot Brain," Motor Booty Affair," "Up for The down Stroke," "One Nation Under a Groove," "Uncle Jam Wants You," and "The Electric Spanking of War Babies." His intergalactic ensemble included separately and in various combinations PARLIAMENT, FUNKADELIC, PARLET, THE BRIDES OF FUNKENSTEIN, and THE P. FUNK ALL-STARS and has featured such talented musicians such as Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell. Clinton's inspired stage shows were dazzling multi-media affairs, culminating in the legendary 1976 Mothership Tour. In 1983, Clinton again topped charts with his COMPUTER GAMES solo LP featuring the hit "Atomic Dog", now, the most played re-played songs in the world. A year later, he released "You Shouldn't Nuff Bit" and "Fish" before taking an extended leave of absence from the public eye.
In recent years, hip hop artists such as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg have incorporated the Parliament style into their recordings, while rock and roll artists like The Red Hot Chili Peppers have adopted the Funkadelic style into their repertoire thus stimulating interest in Clinton and the Parliament/Funkadelic ear.
Recently, George Clinton and the P. Funk All-Stars have re-emerged as one of the hottest touring bands, playing to sell-out crowds world wide. Over the past 3 years, the 30 member band has traveled throughout the US, Europe and Japan. Their style of music appeals to a wide variety of markets, from President Clinton's Inaugural Balls to Lollapalooza 1994 summer tour. With 3-1/2 hours of un-cut P-Funk added to the colorful and unique band costumes, these concerts have become events, not soon to be forgotten.
Currently, Clinton is on Sony 550 recording label. His newest release is due to be released in early 1996. Also to come in '96 is the 20th Anniversary of "The Return of the Mothership" Tour.
George Clinton and the P. Funk All-Stars featuring Parliament/Funkadelic are doing what they do best. "Funk is its own reward" says Clinton, and what a reward it is to capture the past and future of Funk all rolled up in one performance.
